New wheels can change the whole look of your car. But a wheel that looks great online might not fit. Before you buy, you need to know a few numbers. Here they are in plain English.
1. Bolt pattern
The bolt pattern tells you how many lug holes a wheel has and how far apart they are. It’s written like 5×114.3: five lug holes on a circle 114.3 mm across. This has to match your car exactly. “Close” is not good enough, and wobble bolts or adapters are not a substitute for the right wheel.
2. Offset
Offset is the distance in millimetres from the centre of the wheel to the surface that bolts onto your car. It’s often stamped as ET, like ET40.
- Higher offset pulls the wheel further into the wheel well.
- Lower offset pushes the wheel out toward the fender.
Get it wrong and the tire can rub the suspension or the fender, especially when turning or going over bumps. It can also change how the car steers and add stress to wheel bearings.
3. Centre bore
The centre bore is the big hole in the middle of the wheel that fits over your car’s hub. On many cars, the hub carries the weight and keeps the wheel perfectly centred. If an aftermarket wheel’s centre bore is bigger than your hub, a hub-centric ring fills the gap. Skipping these rings is a common cause of highway vibration after new wheels go on.
Other numbers that matter
- Diameter and width, like 18×8. The diameter decides which tire size you need. Width affects how the tire sits.
- Load rating. The wheel must be rated to carry your vehicle’s weight. This matters a lot for SUVs, trucks and EVs, which are heavy.
- Brake clearance. Some wheels won’t clear larger brake calipers, even if every other number is right.
- Lug nut seat. Lug nuts come in different seat shapes (cone, ball, flat). Using the wrong type can let the wheel loosen.
Going bigger?
If you move to a larger wheel, the tire needs a lower profile so the overall height stays about the same. Otherwise your speedometer and some safety systems can be thrown off.
