Ceramic vs. Semi-Metallic Brake Pads: Which Is Right for Your Car?

When we quote a brake job, one of the choices is pad material — usually ceramic or semi-metallic. Here’s what actually separates them.

Ceramic pads

Ceramic pads are quieter, produce less brake dust (so your wheels stay cleaner longer), and tend to be gentler on rotors. They’re a popular choice for everyday commuting and city driving, which covers most Kitchener-Waterloo drivers.

Semi-metallic pads

Semi-metallic pads handle heat better and generally offer stronger stopping power under hard or repeated braking — think towing, mountain driving, or spirited driving. The trade-off is more noise and more brake dust on your wheels over time.

Which one costs more?

Ceramic pads are usually a bit more expensive upfront, but the difference is modest — it shouldn’t be the deciding factor for most drivers.

Our general recommendation

  • Daily commuting, city stop-and-go: ceramic
  • Towing, hauling, or larger trucks/SUVs: semi-metallic
  • Not sure: tell us how you drive and we’ll recommend the right one

Every brake job we do includes a recommendation based on your actual vehicle and driving, not just the cheapest option. See our brake service page or call (226) 698-1667.
