Alloy wheels take a beating from brake dust, road salt, and grime, especially through a Waterloo Region winter. A little regular care keeps them looking good and helps prevent long-term corrosion.
Clean Them Regularly
Brake dust is slightly acidic and can etch into the clear coat if left on too long. Wash your wheels every couple of weeks with a dedicated wheel cleaner and a soft brush, especially during winter when road salt is a factor.
Rinse Off Road Salt Quickly
Salt speeds up corrosion, especially around the wheel’s edges and any spots where the clear coat has already chipped. A quick rinse after driving on salted roads makes a real difference over a winter season.
Watch for Curb Rash and Chips
Small chips in the clear coat or paint expose bare metal, which can corrode over time, especially with winter salt. Touching up chips early, or having them professionally repaired, prevents small damage from spreading.
Consider a Wax or Sealant
A wheel-specific wax or sealant applied a couple of times a year adds a protective layer that makes brake dust and grime easier to wash off, and helps protect against salt.
