When you get new brake pads, some shops tell you that you also need new rotors. Is that true, or is it an upsell? The honest answer: sometimes you need them, sometimes you don’t. Here’s how to know.
When your rotors can stay
Your old rotors can usually stay if all of these are true:
- They are thicker than the minimum size the maker allows (this number is stamped on the rotor).
- The surface is smooth, with no deep grooves.
- You don’t feel shaking or pulsing when you brake.
- There is no heavy rust or a big rust lip on the edge.
- The old pads were replaced before they wore down to metal.
When you need new rotors
- Grinding brakes. If the pads wore down to metal, the rotors are almost always damaged. See grinding noise when braking.
- Shaking or pulsing in the steering wheel or brake pedal. Read why your steering wheel shakes when you brake.
- Too thin. Rotors below the minimum thickness can’t handle heat safely.
- Deep grooves, cracks or heavy rust. Common in Ontario because of road salt.
Why pads and rotors are often replaced together today
Years ago, rotors were thick and could last through several sets of pads. Many modern cars use lighter, thinner rotors to save weight. They wear out faster, and there is often not enough metal left to reuse them safely.
There is also a practical reason. New pads need a flat, clean surface to work well. If you put new pads on old, worn rotors, you may get noise, shaking, or shorter pad life. Replacing both together gives you a fresh start and the best stopping power.
How much more do rotors add to the cost?
At our shop, we price brake jobs as pads and rotors together, so you get one clear price. For most sedans, it’s $350 per axle with a 1-year warranty, or $499 per axle with a 2-year warranty, parts and labour included. For more detail, see our brake job cost guide for Waterloo.
Our honest approach
We measure your rotors and show you what we find. If your pads are fine, we tell you. If you only need attention on one axle, we only quote that axle. You decide.
