Wheel spacers are a popular way to push your wheels out for a wider stance or to fit larger aftermarket wheels. They can look great, but they’re worth understanding before you install them.
What They Do
A wheel spacer is a disc that sits between your wheel hub and the wheel itself, pushing the wheel further out from the vehicle. This widens the track, which some drivers like for both looks and handling.
The Risks If Done Wrong
- Poor-quality or incorrectly installed spacers can put extra stress on wheel bearings and studs
- Spacers that are too thick can affect how much thread engagement your wheel studs have, which is a safety issue
- Pushing wheels out too far can cause them to rub against fenders or suspension components
Doing It Safely
If you want spacers, hub-centric spacers from a reputable brand, properly torqued with the correct length studs or bolts, are the safe way to go. Cheap, generic spacers installed without checking fitment are where most problems come from.
Is It Worth It?
For most daily drivers, the look isn’t worth the added complexity and risk if not done properly. If you’re set on the wider stance, talk to a shop that can check your suspension geometry and use quality parts.
